A black man
In the Deep South
Kissed a white woman in the mouth
In front of friends
No regard to outward appearance

A white woman
Determined with purpose
Looking beneath surface of skin
Took a black man home
To properly introduce to the skeptical parents

Friends fretting on the potential for crimes of hatred
When we wished only well for ones they dated
Father agonizing on believed predilection for domestic violence
Holding hands, dropping heads, we’re appalled into silence

Today, as it was yesterday, it’s you and I
A white woman
A black man
Together
Sharing our own chosen path
We are the best friends
We are our family
No explanations need given
To ignorance we’ve Goddamned
