You and she
Were invited
To a wedding
It is all she talks about
She is beyond excited
To have a night
With you
All dressed up
With dinner
And dancing
I’m tired of hearing about it
I’m tired of hearing her tell me
What she will wear
What you will wear
How much fun it’s going to be
I’m tired of picturing
You holding her hand in the car
Putting your arm
Around her body
As you walk in
Holding her close to you
While you dance
Smiling at her over
Clinking champagne glasses
What if you remember
That you love her more
What if while dancing
You take her face in your hands
And kiss her lips
What if you forget
Everything you’ve told me
Everything you’ve promised
Because of everything you’ve
Told her
Promised her
She will likely invite me over
To help her get ready
And to take pictures
Of the two of you
And I will do it
But it will hurt
I never should’ve loved you
Loving you breaks my heart
A little more each day
How can I trust a man
Who loves a woman
Who isn’t his wife
How can I trust you
To love only me
When will I ever
Get to be your
Plus one at a wedding
There is no scenario
That ends well for us
You have the best of both worlds
And I am
And she is
Jealous, angry, sad, lonely
Every fucking day
I never should’ve loved you
But now I don’t know how not to
So all I have
Is the hope
Or the delusion
That you love me
At least as much
As you love
Her

Gut punch upon gut punch!

He has the best of both worlds.

You have hope? Or delusion?

Both. With pathos.

The sadness in this poem is palpable.
