For you, my love. Please forgive me.

I lay under the sheets
My head on the pillow
My tears had stopped
I was finally mellow.
A crack of light
Came through the door
I knew it was you
But I was still sore.
You stood by the bed
I stayed stubbornly still
You got inside with me
Said nothing until
In a grave voice
“I’m sorry,” you say
Hissing in reply, “you’ve made me this way.”
You were quiet, then
Nothing but breathing
Then you slipped out of bed
“Okay, then I’m leaving.”
“No!” I cried, wincing, “please stay.”
Accusingly, “You do this every day!”
Tears came again
Flowing down my cheek
I was truly sorry
But words make me weak.
“I love you,” I whispered. “I love you. Don’t go.”
More truth in those words
Than you could possibly know.
My heart beat fast
You came back to bed
Slipping in once again
But still, still as lead.
I turned to you then
Took you in my arms
You were still, unmoving
Despite all my charms.
Nuzzling my lips
Deep in your neck
Kissing you wetly
I feared it was hopeless
You held the whole deck.
Just when I’m ready
To turn away once again
You pulled me close
Finally we both gave in
We clung to each other
Both of us in need
Of any reassurance
We each saw our own greed.
“I love you,” you whisper
And I say it back
“I’m sorry,” I tell you
Of truth, there’s no lack
But there will be a ‘next time’
There always is
But we’ll get through it together
So I gave you a kiss.
