I never learned to read music, played everything by ear,
All the subtle chords and notes, easily, I could hear.
Clarinet, coronet, guitar, piano, and violin,
I could always tell the time and key to play in.
I had natural ability and could play any song,
Whatever the melody, my notes were never wrong.
I took a job playing harmony with a classical band,
It didn’t last, couldn’t figure out the music stand.
Next, I worked a gig with a four piece jazz band,
My part not so big, only a one night stand.
I tried playing country, blues, and rock and roll,
Failed at all three, musicians said I lacked soul.
I understood the problem, the answer I didn’t know,
Until the day when I played my music solo.
The problem was me, others I couldn’t accompany.
I played so well, no one wanted to play with me.
Now, I play alone in my five piece ragtime band.
Every time I play, I receive applause from my fans.
I play all five instruments and really give a show.
So, I can’t read music, but how to play I know.
