I went to an Indy car race,
The first one I had seen.
The deafening noise hit my face,
Man challenging machine.
I sat above the pits,
Not far from gasoline alley,
Watching the drivers pit,
By the hand held chalkboard’s tally.
Little Al Unser and Mario Andretti
Competed for the lead from the start.
Bobby Rahal and Emerson Fittipaldi
Placed first and second not far apart.
How must it feel to drive an Indy race car
Getting 1 mile per gallon with 1,000 horsepower?
Champion at winning, an oval track star,
Finishing a 500 mile race in less than 3 hours.
From the stands screamed the fans,
As the cars roared by racing,
An American tradition, oh, so grand,
Is Indy car racing.
but the race uses less fuel than the average peak-period traffic jam in any fair-sized city.
